The combination of obesity, insulin resistance, high cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure are becoming more common in kids as well as adults. Why do we need to do all that we can to prevent these from happening to our kids?? Because by preventing these things, we can prevent or delay diabetes and heart disease in our kids. Lifestyle changes are a necessary component of this equation.

There is this syndrome that is being seen in kids.. it's called metabolic syndrome. It is also known as insulin resistance or dysmetabolic syndrome. It is a group of bad metabolic and clinical effects that occur because of insulin resistance. The syndrome is identified when the patient has 3 of the following: fasting plasma glucose over 110; serum triglycerides over 150mg/dL, HDL less than 40mg/dLfor men and under 50 for women.. waist girth over 40 inches men and 36 for women. When they try and define this in kids, it gets difficult. They go into dividing into age groups and modify the criteria for those under 16.

What kind of example are you setting for your kids? Are you trying to lead a healthy and active lifestyle? Are you paying attention to the foods that are eaten in your household? There is so much information out there, most of it is available at your fingertips (literally) via a quick internet search. It's time to be responsible and take action.
